Fishing BC – Trip Check List
Fall | Winter | Spring (October – April)
What to expect:
When fishing in BC during these months, one can generally experience some cool and wet weather, with day time temps in the low to mid teens (˚C). Occasionally, we can experience 20˚C days in October/November and March/April. Too many people associate Canada’s fall and winter months with extremely cold weather and lots of snow. People have the misconception that we live in -30C weather and are covered in 10ft of snow. Yes, Canada is referred to as the “Great White North”, but in this part of the country, it’s far from that! On the contrary, our mild coastal climate allows us to fish year-round. Don’t be fooled by what you hear! Take advantage of our mild coastal climate and experience year-round fishing opportunities on the Fraser River and it’s tributaries. While most anglers across the country are packing up their rods for the season, we’re enjoying some of the best fishing of the year.
What to bring:
- Warm layers (i.e. synthetics, fleece and/or wool work best, avoid cotton if possible)
- Good waterproof rain gear
- A one-piece long underwear outfit works great as a first layer
- Insulated boots, especially when on the boat (preferably waterproof)
- Sunglasses, warm toque, wool fishing gloves
- If Steelheading, expect to wear 3-4 layers during winter
Tip: It’s better to be overdressed and be able to shed a layer, than be cold and not have any extra layers to put on.
Summer (May – September)
What to expect:
When planning a BC fishing trip during the summer months, you can count on nice weather on most days. Having said that, it is a mountainous region with a coastal climate, meaning that abrupt weather changes can occur at any time. It’s better to have a few extra layers with you, than not have enough. The summer months typically offer warm and dry weather, but mornings and evenings can be on the cooler side. Daytime temps can exceed 30˚C but mornings can be in the low to mid teens (˚C).
What to bring:
- A couple of warmer layers
- T-shirts, shorts, sandals, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
- Long sleeve shirts and long quick-dry pants are an excellent option if one wishes to avoid sun
- A light waterproof rain jacket and rain pants
Tip: You don’t always notice the strength of the sun while on the water. Remember to apply your sunscreen a minimum of 30 minutes before heading out on the water, and re-apply throughout the day.
