Tomas and the rest of his sturgeon team first visited us in 2010. Not knowing what to expect, they’re goal was very simple…. hook and land at least 1 sturgeon each. Well, the guys were in for a treat that week, with plenty of fish between 5-7’, including one over 8 and on the last day, they went out with a bang, landing 46 sturgeon to the boat!….YES, 46 sturgeon to the boat…..just one of those amazing days that as an angler, you will remember for a long time.
This year, they paid us a repeat visit, with more realistic expectations and personal goals, each hoping to land fish over 7ft. Did it get done? You bet!
They spent 7 days with River Sportfishing guides Chris and Matt, covering different parts of the river in search of bigger fish. On their 4th day into the trip, they hooked into a monster fish with guide Matt, that was definitely in the 9-10ft range, but after 1hr of heavy pulling, it came unbuttoned behind the boat while heading to shore to land it. Most would be super disappointed, but these guys were just excited to play and see a fish of this magnitude. They appreciated the fact that they had a chance to experience what so many only dream of. The fact that it came loose with no chance of taking pictures with a trophy Fraser River Sturgeon, didn’t phase these guys. With 3 days remaining, they knew there was more great action to come.
Their last sturgeon day produced a lot of smaller fish in the 3-5ft range, but just as guide Chris was ready to pull the pin for the day, another rod went off and they were into a good fish. This fish peeled off enough line that Chris had to pull up anchor and give chase. It was pulling exceptionally hard, so Chris thought it might have been a fish over 8ft. After a solid 20-minute battle, angler Peter had the fish on shore. Not exactly 8’, but not too far off….a very respectable 7’5”….. a super strong fish that looked like it recently moved in from the ocean. What a great way to finish up the day and sturgeon fishing holiday!
