Sturgeon Fishing
in British Columbia, Canada is recognized internationally
as an incredible sport fishery. British Columbia's
Fraser River is not only the biggest salmon-producing
river found anywhere, but it's also one of the top
sturgeon fishing destinations in the world.
This can be attributed to the large and increasing
population of sturgeon present in the Fraser River
and its tributaries, as well as the incredible sizes
that they can attain. Each year, many anglers plan
their fishing
trips with our company to get a chance at battling
with North America's biggest freshwater game fish.
If you're looking for that ultimate challenge in
freshwater sport fishing, than sturgeon fishing
is for YOU! We recommend you try it at least once
in your lifetime.
Even though Sturgeon fishing is available year-round
on the Fraser River, our main sturgeon season runs
from mid April to end of November see "species
availability chart". However, there are certain
times during our main season that produce exceptional
world-class fishing for sturgeon
(see
our Higlight Fisheries). During these peak periods,
sturgeon gorge themselves on the abundance of food
present in the system, and it's not uncommon to
hook 20+ sturgeon/boat in an 8hr outing. We have
seen 40+ fish days, but that doesn't happen very
often!
Sturgeon have an immense amount of
power and speed, and are capable of peeling 200yds of
line off the spool in seconds. Even though sturgeon
are mostly bottom dwellers, their fighting ability can
be compared to that of any BIG GAME sport fish, and
they aren't referred to the "poor man's marlin"
for nothing. Their aerial displays are an awesome thing
to see, as they launch their massive bodies out of the
water in an attempt to throw the hook. Many of our guests
are overwhelmed at how big and powerful these fish can
really get!
Although our sturgeon can exceed
lengths of 12 ft and can weigh more than 1,000lbs,
the average size of our sturgeon is 2-6 feet in length,
with many bigger fish up to 8+ feet available. Trophy
10+foot sturgeon are not as common but they aren't a
rarity either, and they do get hooked each year.
Superior tackle is a must when fishing
for sturgeon and that's why we use nothing but the best
and most durable gear, so that you may increase your
chances of landing that trophy fish of a lifetime. Shimano
TLD lever-drag reels spooled up with 150lb power-pro
braided line make for an incredibly smooth and powerful
combo. Add the toughness of the Lamiglas rods that can
withstand all the pressure you can put on them, and
you have a very strong outfit that can handle really
big fish. We supply the fighting belts, but you have
to supply the muscle to battle with sturgeon!
The sturgeon fishery is a favourite
amongst many of our guests, many of which return year
after year from halfway around the globe, to chase these
awesome fish. Half the fun of sturgeon fishing is not
knowing what size of fish is biting on your bait and
the adrenalin and anticipation leading up to the hookset
will make your heart pump! Every bite has the possibility
of producing a monster fish, but you just never know
until you make that hookset.
BIG fish, BIG fun, BIG excitement!
if
you're looking for the ultimate in freshwater sport
fishing, consider the Fraser River's MIGHTY STURGEON!
Hook one and you'll be hooked as well!
