We were fortunate to spend a beautiful day out on the water today with our repeat corporate client who was entertaining some of their guests who have never experienced sturgeon fishing before. The day started off fantastic, as within the first 5 minutes we had 3 of the 4 rods going and soon enough we were into our first fish, which jumped 3 times and measured 6’6”. 2 hours later, we had 8 fish to the boat and missed a few more opportunities.
The tide was starting to change for the worse, so we picked up the rods and headed to another portion of the river. We set the rods out, and within several minutes we started getting some good pulls and hooking fish. To make a long story short, the only time we moved for the rest of the day was when we had to take big fish to shore for measurements and pictures.
Big fish, epic jumps and 31 fish to the boat….wow, what a day for the first-time sturgeon anglers. Of course, not every day is like this, but it just goes to show you what this fishery can produce during peak feeding periods.
Our biggest fish of the day came in at 6’10”. We knew it was a really nice fish when it first flew out of the water about 30 yards behind the boat. A few minutes later, it was beside the boat, but down deep. All of a sudden, the line went slack as the fish powered it’s way up for another jump, and jump it did….full body right out of the water and less than 5 feet from the boat….an unreal sight! Upon landing, it sent a huge splash of water that absolutely soaked all of us that were standing in the back of the boat.
What an incredible day for the first time sturgeon anglers…welcome to the world of sturgeon fishing fellas! Hope to see you again soon.
